Internal Medicine

Internal medicine physicians specialize in the non-surgical treatment of adults. Internists are knowledgeable about a broad range of adult symptoms and diseases, making them particularly adept at caring for patients with both simple and complex problems.

The practice of internal medicine is considered a comprehensive specialty and because of the internist’s ability to view the patient as a whole, they serve a critical role in managing and coordinating health care across all stages of an adult’s life.

Dr. McClendon is specially trained to help prevent, detect, and treat diseases in adults and to manage chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, asthma, and arthritis, as well as acute complaints, including infections, abdominal issues, rashes, joint pain, and headaches. Preventative care can include updating vaccines, annual wellness exams, recommending cancer screenings, encouraging healthy lifestyle habits and working with patients to help control risk factors such as elevated blood pressure, obesity, elevated blood sugars and high cholesterol.

Whether visiting our practice for a particular complaint or an annual check-up, Dr. McClendon and mid-level providers focus on each patient’s overall health. We often create long-term care plans which can include medication management, diagnostic testing, and collaboration with specialists.

Specifics

Ear irrigation

This procedure is used to remove wax that is obstructing the ear canal. When ear irrigation is not successful, the physician may use suction or a small device called a curette to remove the wax. Wax blockage is one of the most common causes of hearing loss, but hearing usually returns completely after removal of the blockage.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)

This test records the rate and regularity of heartbeats. It can also measure the size and position of the heart chambers, identify damage to the heart, and test the effects of drugs or devices such as pacemakers that are used to regulate the heart. An ECG is a safe, painless test that takes just a few minutes to perform.

Joint injections

Joint injections are used to treat painful musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis by delivering drugs to the affected area. The most commonly used medications are local anesthetics and anti-inflammatory corticosteroids. For osteoarthritis of the knee, injectable compounds called hyaluronic acid derivatives may be used to provide cushioning and lubrication to the joint.

Nebulizer

A nebulizer is a device that delivers a stream of medicated air to the lungs. Nebulizers are used to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other conditions where inhaled medicines are indicated.

Pulse oximetry

This noninvasive test measures how much oxygen the blood is carrying as a percentage of the maximum that it could carry. To perform this test, a probe is clipped to a finger or earlobe. This probe is connected to a device that monitors oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and sometimes heart rate and blood flow. Pulse oximetry may be used to assess breathing and to monitor patients with lung problems, blood vessel problems, or other conditions that can impair oxygen delivery.

Skin tag removal

Skin tags are small, usually benign skin growths. The most common sites are the neck, armpits, trunk, and body folds. Although skin tags usually are not painful, they may be cosmetically unpleasing. Removal can be done either by freezing (cryotherapy) or by electrically burning them off (cautery).

Spirometry

This is a lung function test that measure how well the lungs exhale. The patient breathes into a mouthpiece connected to an instrument that records the amount and rate of air that is breathed in and out over time. Spirometry is used in the diagnosis of obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

At Home Sleep Studies

Sleep studies help determine if you have obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. McClendon can easily diagnose this irregularity by sending a patient home with an at-home sleep study machine. Sleep apnea greatly affects your cardiovascular system and your quality of life.
